Trip Report

Basic Snowshoe - Kendall First Knob

Great snowshoe with occasional views of the ski resort and Keechelus Lake from Kendall Knob, on a snowy day.

  • Snow and ice on road
  • The trail was in good condition - not the usual hard-packed route.
It snowed on and off throughout the day. We got to break our own trail on the split to the Knob, which everybody enjoyed.

Parking/Roads:

We left Preston ParknRide at about 8.15am and crawled to the Pass. Traffic was very heavy due to snow conditions - lots of cars and trucks pulled over along the way to put on chains. Snowy road conditions well before Exit 47, where the police were checking for chains or AWD.

We arrived at about 9:45 am to park on the side road close to the Kendall Peak Lakes TH (Exit 54) after stopping at the Travelers Rest first (Exit 53) -  a lot of snow on the roads, especially where the cars were parked but still manageable. There weren't many cars there which meant parking was fine.

On returning, there were more cars there later in the day parked in many strange directions - but our 3 cars all got out safely.

We arrived back at the PnRide without any incident.

The Trip:

We got on trail at 10.15am. The snow was soft underfoot the whole way up which was a very pleasant experience, compared to prior trips to this location.

Given the snowfall and the avalanche conditions, we assessed  and proceeded with caution along the way, including the section just before the junction for the Knob where we crossed over the runout area with no trees.

The split off to the Knob was fresh snow, and we had fun making our own trail.  We had lunch there and got to enjoy looking at a very healthy-looking bird (a sooty grouse) and some occasional views of the ski resort and Keechelus Lake.

We were back at the TH at 3.30pm.

We had a fun day out with a great group of people! It was a new trail for some in our group and everyone seemed to enjoy it!
