Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Tinkham Peak+

A fall Tinkham area scramble is touted as being a delightful brisk day with glorious fall colors and excellent views. This wasn't that kind of day, but was still delightful.

  • Road rough but passable
  • Cold and snowy, but most of the lower elevation snow melted by the end of the trip.

A few potholes on the road, easily avoided or run over with the aid of a Land Cruiser.

We had the primary goal of Tinkham, and debated approaches, we settled as a group on clockwise around Mirror Lake starting from that trailhead in order to hopefully tag Abiel and Silver. We planned for and expected some precipitation, we got a bunch of snow, which is a form of precipitation for nearly the entire trip. We had a slippery approach up, over, and down to the Silver/Tinkham saddle where we discussed and decided on attempting Abiel, which a few of us got within 200 feet short of when we decided the rock was too wet/snow covered to safely proceed and doubled back to the saddle and down to the PCT.

There were definitely opportunities to have made different and more safe snow based decisions, but ultimately found safe routes to negotiate the problems and get up and back Tinkham successfully. A potentially better bad weather route would be returning down the East approach from Tinkham or having done the loop counter clockwise. The talus to Silver and the ledges up to Abiel were not idea for wet/snowy conditions.

We also built the Abiel bodied snow person as a consultation activity and to make up for no summit picture.
