Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Stevens Peak

A long but successful scramble, which require snow, rock and route finding skills. Will great views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding peaks.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail, snow, rock and meadows. Snow conditions were ideal for kicking steps. There was much less snow on the route than what I was expecting.

Sunny nice day and a good group for a scramble near mount Rainier. We left the trailhead about 7:45 and returned about 7:15 so it was a long day. We followed the standard north route for Stevens Peak. We had to pick our way down from the ridge between Unicorn and Boundary stay on snow for most of the way but did need to scramble through a couple of rock bands. Then from the saddle between Boundary and Stevens we traverse pass the rock outcrops on the ridge and took a gully system back to the ridge. This gully system proved to have a lot of loose rock and rock fall was a major concern. One party member choose at this point not to continue. Note, we should have continue traverse pass a large rock outcrop and then climb through the meadows to the ridge top (this is the way we came down). Once the ridge top was gain we follow the climber trail to the summit.
