Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Silver King

Ideal day for student practice and scenic loop.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Well consolidated but not too icy snow after recent warm days followed by cooling, with no worrisome avalanche factors.

We went up by Quicksilver chair, followed cat track into South Backcountry basin, practiced ice axe arrest at base of steeper slope.  We ascended on 40 degree snow slopes in bowl to saddle just SE of 6640' closed contour which is SE of Point 6719.  Easy travels to summit from there.  Traversed past The Throne then glissaded into Campbell Basin.  Those with snowshoes used them on the route down the ski slopes, but not necessary.  Students did great, and we had ideal snow conditions, weather and views, making this a day to remember!  7:15 including instructional practice.
