Alpine Scramble - Sasse Mountain (winter)

Early winter scouting trip to investigate a possible route.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Several recent downed trees over trail.

I have led Sasse as a winter scramble half a dozen times, ascending the south side of Howson Creek. I would like to find a nice descent route on the north side of Howson Creek to make this into a wonderful winter loop trip. I have explored several descent routes in winter without finding the  perfect descent path. The purpose of today's scramble was to scout various routes before they were covered with snow.  We almost were too late, as snow fell on the upper 500 feet while we were climbing them.  While we had an enjoyable scramble, the perfect descent route remains elusive.

We did find one choice Boletus mirabilis, which somehow made it into our packs.

Due to the snow storm at the summit, our summit treats were delayed until we returned to the cars, where we enjoyed homemade brownies and oshibori.
