Trip Report
Alpine Scramble - Mount Townsend
Snow on trail necessitated access via Silver Lakes trail. Trail is very rough with tree roots and 1/2 way snow covered. We were glad we brought and used steel crampons.

We left the trailhead at 8:20 and encountered snow about half way to the lake. Crampons made travel much easier for traction on hard and soft snow. Took about 3.5 hours to get to lake which was still snow covered, but not walkable. Ascended to ridge and took packs and crampons/ice axes up and encountered snow and put crampons on to get to out top at 6300ft. We took a sharp right turn and went straight up, following some carins. At 6300ft, we could see the summit of Hawk, about 1/2 mile away on the ridge but turned around due to time. We then descended then traversed the ridge and ascended the adjacent peak (Eagle?). One student had a nice glissade back down to the lake. We walked back out on the snow and got back to the car quite late, about 8pm. The trail was deplorable with lots of others footsteps. Beautiful day but non-ideal travel conditions.
