Alpine Scramble - Lichtenberg Mountain

Lichtenberg Mt. from 1st hairpin turn off Smithbrook road, to Lichtenwasser Lake, then to summit.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Road is drive-able to where we started at 1st hairpin turn (and then farther up Smithbrook road but not sure how far).  We took the fisherman's path to creek crossing.  The water is running high and made for a challenging crossing.  The path is not easy to follow and disappears  and we ended up doing lots of the travel up this steep section in the brush.  The snow started ~4,400 and then was fairly consistent to the lake and beyond.  On the way back down from the lake, we opted for the "winter route". While this is as steep in parts as the fisherman's path, this way has a bootpath with swithchbacks that can be followed - much better! The route heads N down from the lake.  Also the creek crossing was much easier here with logs to use in the crossing. At the summit block there are two ways to the top - up on the rock or skirt below on the snow.  Both go.  It was a really awesome day in the mountains - perfect weather, bugs not too bad, 360 views at summit and most of all a fantastic, fun and supportive group of Mountaineers!
