Alpine Scramble - Church Mountain

Good Scramble with short T5 sections

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Later season scramble making  areas of moss more challenging.

Great Walk in,  the berries were plentiful .

Between wet moss, some serious exposure and wind we decided to turn around at what I believe is the T5 crux area.

The traverse after the look out did not present as easy as we expected.  Summit Post GPX   had the route leaving directly from the lookout top.  It looked too steep for the team so we found a way by going back along the ridge and finding a down climb to the scree slopes below the ridge. We had to work our way through a  T4 mossy (wet) slope.

From there we traversed up to the ridge; that proved straight forward.  About 50 feet beyond the notch below the summit massif was the crux in a small gully;very doable if comfortable with exposure and have good balance and scramble skills.  As a team we chose not to proceed.

On the return most of the team could follow the some times airy but solid path along the ridge proper. The crux was a steep section just below the lookout that had looked impassable when looked at from the lookout. Going up to the lookout was solid but airy and required good scramble skills.

Great route.  Will do it again.
