Vestal Peak/Wham Ridge (Colorado)

A classic high altitude climb on good quartzite rock in the Grenadier Range of the San Juans

Suggested approach via Molas Pass, since the logistics for the Silverton train add to the complexity (but do provide romance perhaps).  From Molas Pass descend 1800' down to cross the Animas river and head up the Elk Creek trail.  After 7m from the road, arrive at a a nice flat meadow where Vestal Creek joins.  Additional time camping here aids acclimatization, though some parties might climbing it in a long day.

Wham ridge is actually more of a face climb, and though some parties solo it, it's recommended to bring rope and enough gear to set running belays/anchors.  Generally parties consider it 6-9 pitches of climbing, with easier climbing to the right of the face, except just below the summit heading left.

The descent is on the south side, and loose chossy rock; wind around the peak on the western side back to the approach trails.
