This area is used for field trips, by special arrangement with Washington State DNR. It is located off of I-90, adjacent to Rattlesnake Mountain Scenic Area.

getting there

Take Exit 25 off of I-90 (for SR-18). Turn left onto SE 104th St, and then right onto Rattlesnake RD SE (DNR 35000). Please note that this location is  behind several gates, and is inaccessible unless instructors are present to open them. Carpooling is strongly encouraged, as parking at the site is extremely limited. Instructors will communicate with participants ahead of time to facilitate carpooling and confirm driving directions.

INFORMATION FOR LEADERS

  • The Mountaineers holds a Land Use License with Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). All fee-based (course-related) activities, regardless of group size, and all free activities involving 26 or more people must be included in our Land Use License. Trips are submitted to DNR annually in December for the following calendar year. If your proposed trip was not included in our  annual request, please contact info@mountaineers.org as soon as possible. DNR requires that additional proposed activities be submitted to them in writing a minimum of 30 days prior to the proposed activity date (60 days for wilderness navigation). More details about permitting on WA DNR land as it applies to Mountaineers trips, as well as our current year Land Use License can be found here.
