State Route 410

In winter and snow levels permitting, SR-410 becomes a winter playground once it has closed. Snowshoe or ski south on the highway as many miles as you wish with minimal elevation gain.

getting there

From Enumclaw, drive SR-410 east to its junction with Crystal Mountain Boulevard, just before the entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Once SR-410 is closed for the winter, it's gated. Turn left on to Crystal Mountain Boulevard and then immediately turn right to enter the Silver Creek Sno-Park (2,750 ft). Be sure you don't park at the gate on SR-410 because you may be ticketed or towed.

snowshoe & ski route

Every year, SR-410 closes for the winter, usually December through March. When there's sufficient snow on the ground at this elevation, SR-410 becomes a winter playground! This two-lane road through dense woods offers a path for snowshoers and cross-country. Snowmobiles are allowed to cruise on SR-410 in winter as well.

From the parking area, pass beneath the Mount Rainier National Park sign and head south on SR-410 as far as you wish. In 2 miles reach a fairly level stretch that a good turnaround point for an easy trip. More ambitious travelers may aim for the junction with the Sunrise Road at 4.8 miles, for 9.6 miles round-trip. Going past the Sunrise Road junction is not recommended because the road travels in the path of numerous avalanche chutes.
