Seven Lakes Basin & High Divide

A moderate to strenuous backpack of 26 miles with 4,000 feet of gain in the west side of the Olympics.

From US 101 turn into the Sol Duc Hot Spring Road and continue 14 miles to the parking lot at it's end.

Suggested backpack itinerary

  • Day 1: Hike from Sol Duc to Appleton Pass/Oyster Lake.
  • Day 2: Hike to Seven Lakes Basin via Spread Eagle Pass, Swimming Bare Lake and then over past Heart Lake.
  • Day 3: Hike out via High Divide, Potholes Meadows, and Deer Lake.


Scramble Mount Carrie (6,995 ft) and/or Cat Peak (5,940 ft), two of the first peaks in the Bailey Range, as part of your trip.


  • Consider spending two nights at Seven Lakes Basin, and bring your swimsuit if you dare.
