Redstone Peak

A short but challenging scramble with a long approach. Located off of the Northern Loop trail in the northwest part of Mount Rainier National Park, this scramble is 24 miles with 3,800 feet of gain.

Getting There

From Enumclaw drive east on SR-410 toward Mount Rainier. Turn right on Forest Road 73 and drive  10 miles to Eleanor Creek.

An alternate, longer approach is from Sunrise.

Approach & Ascent

Hike to Lake Eleanor on a boot path and then follow the Lake Eleanor Trail through Grand Park to the Northern Loop Trail. Follow the Northern Loop Trail west, cross the West Fork White River, and continue to the Lake James Patrol Cabin. From the cabin, hike E across Van Horn Creek drainage to the bottom, left side of an obvious rock slide. Ascend to a point halfway up the rockslide, but in the trees. Continue up and left to a second and less obvious rock slide. Exit this rockslide through a narrow gully at the top. Continue up through a third rockslide to the ridge at 5400’, NE of the summit. Leave the ridge and do a somewhat level traverse on the NW side of the summit just below a cliff, to a very grassy gully. Ascend gully to a ridge, contour on the SE side and up to the summit, the NE peak.
