getting there

From US 101, turn west onto Lake Cushman Road and in 1.5 miles turn right onto Forest Road 2419. Continue to just past the second  crossing of Big Creek (3,100 ft).

A small way trail leads to the base of a large rock section of the southeast ridge at 3700 ft. Bear right (east) around these rocks and follow the ridgeline until force right (north)  by prominent gendarmes. Contour  closely along the based of the gendarmes and arrive at the bowl at the base of Shield Wall. The climb starts on climbers left of the wall.

Climb seven pitches to reach the top of the Shield Wall, then two rappels and an additional 2-3 pitches to reach the summit. The first pitch has 2 fixed bolts midroute and a bolted belay station.
