Methow Wildlife Area
A state-managed wildlife area to the east of Twisp and Winthrop in the Methow Valley where a number of opportunities for hiking and mountain biking exist between April 1 and December 14, and for snowshoeing once snow hits the ground.
Opportunities for hiking include Pipestone Canyon, Pipestone Rim, and Bowen Mountain. In winter, much of the area is closed from December 15 through March 31 for protection of mule deer habitat. However, the slopes around Bowen Mountain and Cougar Lake are not closed and are popular for snowshoeing. This area is notable tor interesting geology in the Pipestone Canyon, nesting sites for golden eagles in the spring (NOTE; the rim itself is closed from April 1 through May 15 to protect the golden eagles during nesting), for amazing displays of spring wildflowers, for stunning fall colors changes (think aspens), and more notorious for rattlesnakes in the Canyon bottom once the weather warms up. In winter, it makes for a great nearby location for snowshoe trips of shorter to longer destinations.
