Matthews Beach to Carkeek Park
The trip is a moderate trip with approximately 8 miles of walking and 775 feet of elevation gain. Walk from Lake Washington to Puget Sound, crossing the divide that separates the Thornton Creek watershed and the Piper Creek watershed.
Getting There
Parking is available at Matthew's Beach and Carkeek Park, at the beginning and end of the route. There are restroom facilities at both parks, as well as at several locations along the way.
On the trail
Thornton Creek, the largest creek in Seattle, flows into Lake Washington at Matthews Beach Park. Follow the approximate course of Thornton Creek upstream to the surface water divide. Then follow Piper Creek downstream until it reaches Puget Sound. When you start, the creek will be flowing to the east behind you. When you finish, the creek will be flowing to the west in the direction of travel. End the walk on the beach at Carkeek Park.
