Leadbetter State Park & Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

We will travel along the trail system of Leadbetter State Park to the edge of the Willapa Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. Terrain will be highly variable and could be quite squishy/muddy/flooded. 2.5mph, negligible elevation gain. We will be walking on sand for quite a while, please bring supportive footwear (ankle).

Discover Pass Required. We will begin at 8am from Leadbetter Point Trailhead at the end of Stackpole Road. (46.6070137,-124.0432385)

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge hard-closes to all foot travel 3/15 to 9/30 due to the preservation of nesting areas for the Snowy Plover. I have spoken to representatives of the refuge and it is currently open for foot traffic. I ask that we leverage the tidal beach and walk with care to limit our impact on the land.

It is possible that the stewards plant the sign that closes the area early; in that case, we can expect a ~5 mile day as we will not cross into the refuge. If the land north of Bearberry Trail is open, the tide table agrees, and terrain looks passable, we will make an attempt to the tip of Leadbetter Point. This will mean an additional 5-7 miles of sandy walk time.
