Labyrinth Mountain

The standard route is a relatively easy scramble with 7 miles and 2,700 feet of elevation gain with a hike to alpine lakes and a summit with beautiful views of the Wild Sky Wilderness. The West ridge shares the appproach and is a more challinging scramble.

getting there

At 4.2 miles east of Stevens Pass on SR-2, turn left through the island onto Smith Brook Road (Forest Road 6700). Follow it for 5.5 miles to a fork.  Turn left onto Forest Road 6704 towards Lake Wenatchee and drive about 1 mile to the Minotaur Lake Trailhead.

approach & ascent

Approach

Follow the trail to Minotaur Lake.

standard route

7 miles route trip, 2,700 feet of elevation gain, difficulty: Strenuous 2, Technical 2

Ascend to high ground on the east side of the lake. Hike to the head of the lake, and then follow the watercourse up to the basin below the peak. Ascend to the col between peaks at 6,340 ft. The benchmark and summit register are on the east peak, but the west peak appears higher.

South Ridge

8 miles round trip, 3,200 feet of elevation gain, difficulty Strenuous 3, Technical 4

From the west side Minotaur Lake, follow a boot path to a notch/saddle in the south ridgeline of Labyrinth Mountain. Consider running the ridge south to also summit Minotaur Peak (6,262 ft)—it adds 300 feet of elevation gain and 0.3 mile round trip. Follow the ridge north, descending on the west side of the ridge as needed. Regain the ridge just below the prominent horn (6,090 ft) and pass it on its east side. Alternatively, continue north below the west side of the horn and take any gully east to return to the ridgeline. Continue on and/or just below the ridge until reaching the true summit with a benchmark and summit register.

Descent

Descend the standard route.
