Johnston Ridge & The Hummocks
A challenging hike that starts at the Hummocks Trail and follows part of the Boundary Trail to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Enjoy the hummocks plains, wildflowers, and views as you are immersed in the Mount St. Helens landscape.
Temporary Closure
In May 2023, a landslide on SR-504 caused significant damage to the Spirit Lake Outlet Bridge at milepost 49. The upper portion of SR-504 between mileposts 45.2 and 51 will remain closed to the public for the remainder of 2023 and into spring 2024. Visit the WSDOT website for updates.
Getting there
Take Exit 49 off of I-5, drive SR 504 east for 45 miles, and turn right into the parking lot and trailhead (2,550 ft).

The Hummocks
Hike The Hummocks loop either direction. It's an easy day hike of 2.5 miles with 250 feet of elevation gain.
Johnston Ridge
Hike either side of The Hummocks loop and continue on the Boundary Trail to Johnston Ridge Observatory (4,180 ft). On the return be sure to hike the other side of The Hummocks loop. It's 9 miles round trip with 1,750 feet of elevation gain.
