Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a dramatic, multicolored gorge carved by the Yellowstone River, featuring sheer cliffs and two powerful waterfalls—Upper and Lower Falls. Its vibrant hues come from hydrothermally altered rock, making it one of the most iconic and photogenic landscapes in Yellowstone National Park.

Starting from the Wapiti Lake Trailhead, this scenic route follows the South Rim Trail along the dramatic edge of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The trail meanders through pine forest before offering up spectacular views at Artist Point, one of the most iconic overlooks of the canyon and Lower Falls. Continuing east, the path becomes quieter and more secluded as it approaches Point Sublime, a less-visited outcrop with sweeping views into the canyon.

From here, hikers may retrace their steps or complete a loop by taking the Clear Lake–Ribbon Lake Trail. This alternate route winds past tranquil thermal features, the lily-covered shores of Ribbon Lake, and eventually reconnects with the Wapiti Lake Trail through a series of forested meadows and gentle rolling terrain. This full loop showcases both the dramatic cliffs of the canyon rim and the quiet beauty of Yellowstone’s interior.
