getting there

Drive the Bumping River Road (Forest Road 18) off of SR-410 (19 miles east of Chinook Pass). Turn right and drive 5.8 miles to the Goat Creek Trailhead and the Cougar Flat Campground.

on the trail

The trail ascends steeply right from the start thru a series of switchbacks on the ridge above Goat Creek. Hike through forest and wildflower lined hillsides as the views just get better higher up on the ridge. At 4 miles reach the American Ridge Trail, turn right (east), and follow the ridge top for 1 mile. This is where the effort pays off with great views to the north, south and east. At 5 miles from the trailhead take the small spur trail for the steep 0.5 mile trip to 6,473-foot summit of Goat Peak with its 360 degree views of Mount Adams, the Cascades,  Mount Rainier, Mount Aix, and Bumping Lake among others.
