"It’s not the mountain one must conquer, but one’s self." -- Sir Edmund Hillary

This outing combines the highest peaks on Earth, Himalayan culture, and mountaineering history. Nepal is a fascinating country with spectacular scenery, ancient Hindu and Buddhist religions, and friendly people. After touring three World Heritage sites near Kathmandu, we will fly to Lukla and trek up past  the Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar and the Buddhist Tengboche monastery to the Khumbu region’s classic Mt. Everest viewpoint at Kala Patar (18,450 feet) and Mt. Everest base camp.  Climbers continue on to summit 19,049-foot Pokalde, then up and over three 20,000-foot passes to the basecamp for Makalu (fifth highest mountain in the world).  (See "Trek to Mount Everest Basecamp and Kala Patar"  to enjoy the stunning trekking portion of this adventure without the climbing segment.)  The trek is a strenuous hike; the climb is very strenuous because of the altitude. Porters will haul your overnight gear, so you carry only a daypack.
