Day Hiking in Canada's Yoho National Park
Crisscrossed with trails through its spectacular mountains, Yoho National Park is a mecca for hikers, backpackers, and rock climbers, as well as anyone interested in fossils. One of the most important fossil discoveries of all time - the Burgess Shales - is nestled in a stunning landscape of imposing mountains, vast glaciers, thundering waterfalls, and expansive alpine meadows carpeted in wildflowers.
Yoho National Park along with the adjacent Kootenay National Park span several mountain ranges with peaks towering over 10,000 feet, massive ice fields and glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, and gorgeous alpine lakes. Three main trailheads serve as hubs for a wide range of hiking and climbing opportunities: Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls, and Lake O’Hara.
Emerald Lake hosts an upscale lodge and trails leading to Mount Carnarvon, Yoho Pass, and Burgess Pass. Takakkaw Falls is the starting point for many trails including those leading to the Little Yoho Valley, the Iceline Trail, and the multi-day Bow-Yoho Traverse that crosses a vast ice field. It is also the starting point for the Ranger-led tours of the Burgess Shales. Lake O’Hara, site of another upscale lodge, has trails radiating in all directions to such destinations as the Odaray Grandview, McArthur Pass, Yukness Mountain, Lake Oesa, Abbot Pass, and the Wiwaxy Peaks. The park also includes backcountry campsites and climbers huts.
Getting There: Yoho National Park is about a ten to twelve hour drive from Seattle (depending on which route you choose). It is also about a two and a half hour drive from the Calgary International Airport.
