Fort Ward
Fort Ward Park offers an easy, short hike with low elevation gain, making it suitable for beginners and casual walkers. Located on Bainbridge Island, the trails wind through historic military grounds, forested areas, and along Puget Sound shoreline, with views of Seattle, old bunkers, and interpretive signs highlighting the site’s coastal defense history.
getting there
From the Seattle area, take the Bainbridge Island ferry from downtown Seattle to reach Fort Ward Park. After exiting the ferry, follow the main road south through Winslow and continue onto Blakely Avenue, then turn onto NE Country Club Road and follow signs to Fort Ward Hill Road, which leads directly into the park. The drive includes a mix of small-town streets and forested island roads, ending near the shoreline trailheads and parking areas.
