PUT-IN
- Dungeness Forks Campground at the confluence with Gray Wolf River. To reach the campground by car, from Highway 101 mile 267.4 take Palo Alto Road south for 8 miles. Turn right onto FR 2880 and continue for 1 mile down to the bridge crossing the upper Dungeness fork. Cross the bridge and go right into the Dungeness Forks Campground. The trailhead is at the south end of the campground, about a 3 minute hike and not too brushy. There is a larger parking area to the left alongside the Gray Wolf River.
TAKE-OUT
- Dungeness Fish Hatchery. By car, take Highway 101 west to mile 262.0, just west of the bridge over the Dungeness River, turn south on the Taylor Cut-Off Road, go 2.7 miles, turn left on May Road and in another 0.3 miles head right onto Fish Hatchery Road. At the far end of the facility there is a public parking area. The river is a couple hundred yards directly to the east on an obvious trail. Be sure to scout the take out when dropping off the shuttle car. From the river the take out is hard to discern. There is not much of an eddy and it is obscured by overhanging branches.
ON THE RIVER
There are no big drops on the run but the river serves up continuous action with class II and III whitewater. Although the channel is relatively wide, you can expect wood to be in play and it is not uncommon to have a couple of channel-spanning strainers. Several man made logjams compound the hazards of this run. Don't commit to any blind corners as eddies can be limited and wood hazards may come up quick. Towards the lower half of the run there are a few islands where you may need to pick the clean channel.
