Chiwaukum Creek

A moderate, 12 mile round trip day hike or snowshoe trip with 1,550 feet of elevation gain. The trail heads up on a gentle slope, following the creek through a mixture of old and new-growth forests.

getting there

Turn on to Chiwaukum Creek Road (Forest Road 7908) off of SR 2, about one mile west of the Tumwater Campground. Continue to the trailhead (1,800 ft). In winter, the road-end and parking varys depending on the snow level.

Snowshoe route

Start by heading west up the Chiwaukum Creek valley, a hiking trial in summer. This is a very pleasant trip with a gentle, steady elevation gain.  Turnaround in about 5 miles in, where the trail splits at the confluence with the Chiwaukum Creek South Fork. For those wanting more adventure other trails continue on from here.

notes

  • Because of steep slopes above this trail one should pay particular attention to the avalanche forecast before heading out, as well as to current conditions while on the trail.  Consider a backup destination when avalanche forecast is rated moderate or higher.
