Burley Mountain Lookout

A 7-mile one-way trip with 4,000 feet of elevation gain to a lookout tower built in 1934 with views of Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount St Helens, and Mount Hood.

getting there

From Randle, drive 9 miles south following SR-131 and then Forest Road 23 to the junction of Cispus Rd. Turn right, crossing over the Cispus River and Yellowjacket Creek, to another junction immediately across from Yellowjacket Creek. Go straight for 1 mile and park on Forest Road 28 at the Covel Creek Falls Trailhead (1,300 ft).

Follow the Covel Creek Falls Trail (No. 228A) for 1 mile to its junction with the Burley Mountain Trail (No. 256). Turn left and hike up the Burley Mountain Trail until it ends in 1.8 miles at Forest Road 7605 (4,000 ft). Turn left and hike the road  south for 2.3 miles to Forest Road 7605-086. Follow this road 1 mile to the summit.

notes

  • In early season, bring snowshoes for the snowy road walk to the summit.
  • One the way up or down, a small loop can be made at the Burley Mountain Trail and Covel Creek Falls junction to visit Angel Falls. This adds ~0.25 mile of hiking.
