Blue Lake and Cornice Peaks
The route travels through old growth timber transitioning to alpine vegetation, and on to open rock and snow slopes. This is a unique summit providing views N to Liberty Bell, NE to Silver Star Mt., SE to Kangaroo Temple, S to Stiletto Pk., W to Corteo & Black Peaks, and NW to Cutthroat Pk. Blue Lake Peak is 1 mile east of Blue Lake and 0.7 mile south of South Early Winter Spire.
on the trail
Starting at the Blue Lake trailhead (~5375’) ascend hiking trail to an elevation of 6100 feet. At this elevation there is a climber’s trail that leads (east) to Liberty Bell, and South Early Winter Spire. On the climber’s trail generally head east and south until the ridge between South Early Winter Spire and Cornice Peak is reached. Head south on ridge until the base of Cornice Peak (~7300 ft.) is reached. Alternate approach: about 100 vertical feet below the ridgeline traverse south until the base of Cornice Peak (~7300 ft.) is reached. Ascend snow, scree, &/or talus to reach the ridge line that connects Cornice and Blue Lake Peaks. Consider topping out where Cornice’s west ridge meets the ridge line that connects Cornice and Blue Lake Peaks.
