Baker & Otto Preserves (Lummi Island)

Explore the natural preserves of Lummi Island, Baker Preserve and Otto Preserve. Both are managed by the Lummi Island Heritage Trust. Take the small island ferry as a foot passenger. Enjoy views of the San Juan Islands from the overlook in the Baker Preserve.

Take Interstate 5 to Exit 260 (Slater Road), turn left, heading west. Follow Slater Road 3.2 miles to Haxton Way. Turn left on Haxton Way. Follow Haxton Way 7 miles to the Lummi Island Ferry. Park in the area near the ferry dock.

on the Island

Exit the Lummi Island ferry turn left and walk approximately two miles to Sunrise Road.

Otto Preserve is at 3560 Sunrise Road. The main trail loops through a mature forest and is well protected from light rains by its many sheltering trees. When hiked with the Baumgart Woods and Walden Walk side trails, you'll enjoy an easy 1.4 mile walk.

The Baker Preserve is located on Seacrest Drive, about a third of a mile south of its intersection with Sunrise Road. The hike takes you up a steep and winding trail. It is 1.64 miles to an overlook with beautiful views of the San Juan Islands.

Notes

  • The Baker Preserve limits groups to six, so if you take 12, split into two groups and tour the preserves separately.
  • Enjoy lunch at the Baker Preserve's viewpoint or at the Heritage Trust House near Otto Preserve.
  • Maps from the Lummi Island Heritage Trust are available at the trailheads of both preserves.
