Alderbook Nature Trails

Lots of options to piece together a hike of up to 5 miles on this forested loop on the slopes above the Hood Canal. This trail system is affiliated with the Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union, and is only open to guests of the resort.

getting there

While the lower trailhead is more accessible, just off SR-106 across from the resort, there is limited parking. Consider using the upper trailhead at the large gravel parking area opposite the Alderbrook Golf Course clubhouse. From SR-106 just west of the resort, turn left (south) onto E Beach Dr, then left (east) onto E Country Club Drive East, and continue to the parking area.

on the trail

At the upper trailhead, take a moment to appreciate the views down to the Hood Canal and across to the Olympic Range, then hike to Devil's Club Crossing and keep left toward Dogwood Ridge. This starts a clockwise loop that gives the most mileage over the trail system without covering too much of the same ground. Stay left at each junction on the gently-rolling Dogwood Ridge trail, then cross a bridge and down the Licorice Fern trail. Cross the Thimbleberry Bridge at the lower trailhead and continue making lefts to take in the Viewpoint and Big Tree Loops. The Gathering Grove features picnic tables and outhouse. Then it's all uphill on the Huckleberry Hillclimb Trail back to the upper trailhead.
