Stewardship - Church Creek–Satsop Lakes

Preparation for 2022 trail maintenance on Church Creek Trail #871. This is both an access road clearing trip to the Eastern (Skokomish) trailhead and a scouting trip on the Church Creek Trail to document trail problems for future trail maintenance days.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 2.4 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,400 ft

We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at Haggen’s Grocery located at 1313 Cooper Point Road Northwest, Olympia.  Meet on the left-hand side of the large parking lot (left while facing the storefront) over by a row of trees.

We will make arrangements for party members to return to Olympia by 5:00 PM. If needed and if crew members  are interested, a portion of our crew may stay foe an extra hour if needed to finalize the  road clearing.

Church Creek Plan
Once we get to the Trail access road, I'm planning to start by have two people hike up the road - probably up to 1.5 miles while staying in contact via walkie talkies.  The rest of the crew will begin working on the first down tree. I am thinking the scouts will be very important to allow us to know what we are dealing with in terms of the amount and scale of the road clearing.  If the scouts find the road is clear they would keep going and we'd pick them up on our way up.  If the road is blocked with severe down trees or even partially blocked the two scouts would repot via radio and then decide if they can scramble around and continue safely or rejoin the group.
