Sea Kayak - Fox Island Circumnavigation

We’ll launch from Fox Island bridge paddling clockwise until reach Fishing Pier Park at east end of the island where we’ll have lunch. After lunch we’ll continue south rounding Gibson Point, continue paddling until reaching Tacoma DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve. After a short break and playing. We'll return to launch at Fox Island bridge. After everyone’s loaded up, we can proceed to Fox Island store for pizza.

  • Sea Kayak III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 11.5 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 14 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2.5 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts
  • Pace: 2.8

A note I am willing to paddle in up to 25 kn gusts in the waters around Fox Island because they are sheltered. I have. Observed small waves in that area during storms.

Proper immersion clothing required

Bring if you own these:

VHF marine radio, tow belt

Pack a lunch and snacks. Bring hot beverage to pour on your hands or drink.

There are a few streets that terminate at waters edge along South Shore of Fox Island. These are possible bio break spots.  If needed.

We'll meet at Fox Island Bridge at 7:30 AM. We'll have our beach talk at 8:15 AM and launch by 8:30 AM.

It's a dirt parking lot so park close together to save room for others and so we don't block the boat ramp. There are no restrooms at this location. The Tacoma, DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve has a porta potty restroom. It's approximately 3/4 of a mile from the bridge on Fox Island.

There's also restrooms at the Fox Island store and gas station approximately a mile or so up Island Blvd, left at Fox Drive.
