Sea Kayak - Blake Island Marine State Park

We'll leave from the Pomeroy Park boat launch in Manchester, WA, paddle to the northeast tip of Blake Island, circumnavigate Blake Island Marine Park in a clockwise direction, have lunch on the eastern side of the island, practice rescues, and return to Manchester midafternoon.

Meet at the  Pomeroy Park boat ramp  in Manchester, WA at 9:00am.  We'll unload boats & gear down near the water, then park cars, put our gear on, have a brief  pre-paddle talk at 9:45, and plan to launch by 10:00am.  We'll circumnavigate Blake Island, beginning at the northeast tip, in a clockwise manner, have  lunch on the eastern shore, practice rescues at some point on the return trip (either on the west side of Blake Island or near Manchester), and anticipate returning  to Manchester by 2:30pm.  

The Ten Essentials are required for this paddle.

There are no kayak or equipment rentals available in Manchester, you will need to bring your own equipment.

Bring:  Lunch & hot drink

               Rain gear or a poncho,

               Drysuit (required - no wetsuits!)

               Spare warm clothes

               Waterproof camera (if desired)

               Tacoma students need to bring their completed paddle completion sheet (download off the website) - we'll discuss these at lunchtime.

Required Equipment

These seven essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  (All except for spare clothes and food should be supplied with Kayak rentals)

  1. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  2. Paddle
  3. Paddle float & bilge pump
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Kayak with secure bulkheads or bulkhead flotation bags in both ends of the kayak
  6. Waterproof whistle
  7. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally

    THE MOUNTAINEERS TEN ESSENTIALS

    1. Navigation: map, altimeter, compass, [GPS device], [PLB, satellite communicator, or satellite phone], [extra batteries or battery pack]
    2. Headlamp: plus extra batteries
    3. Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes, and sunscreen
    4. First aid: including foot care and insect repellent (if required)
    5. Knife: plus repair kit
    6. Fire: matches, lighter and tinder, or stove as appropriate
    7. Shelter: carried at all times (can be a lightweight emergency bivy)
    8. Extra food: beyond minimum expectation
    9. Extra water: beyond minimum expectation, or the means to purify
    10. Extra clothes: sufficient to survive an emergency overnight
