Naturalist Trip - Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge
Lets go birding! Join us at this premier birding hotspot. Fall migrants have been trickling in since late summer. We last visited in September. Let's see how many more birds have arrived. All birders are welcome. We will walk slowly and stop often to share skills and knowlege. One leader in training is welcome to serve as Assistant Leader.

I led a group here in Sept knowing that it was a little early for all the migrating birds. We saw some great early arrivals. I expect to see many more arrivals on this follow up date. It is amazing to see the contrast in the thousands of wintering birds here in December vs September. And challenging to identify them all. This will be a full day of birding approximately 5-6 hours. We will walk at a SLOW pace and STOP often to listen and search for birds. You will need:
- National Park Pass or purchased day pass
- 10 Essentials
- Binnoculars and Scope if you have one.
- Birding guide book or birding app like the free Merlin App.
- Lunch, snacks and water. We will find picnic tables and or areas to sit for lunch. We will NOT stop for snacks. We will walk slow enough to eat snacks as we walk.
- Dress for the weather. It can get windy and cold on the exposed Dike Trail and McAllister Creek boardwalk.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes. There may be mud and puddles we have to walk through and wet boardwalks can be slippery.
Leaders in Training: Please contact me at 206-550-3890 to secure your Assistant Leader position as soon as possible. It will be held for you until Firday 12/5. If not taken, the position will be cancelled and offered to the first waitlisted participant.
We'll meet at 9:00am at the overlook deck by the visitors center ready to bird. Restrooms are located here.
A National Park Pass is required. A $3 day pass can be purchased at the oudoor kiosk by the visitor center. The day pass is good for upto 4 people.
