Day Hike - Squak Mountain: May Valley Access

Conditioning hike and gear shakeout for B3 students featuring the tall trees and steep slopes of Squak- but all members are welcome. Channel your inner Steve McQueen while you check out the Bullitt fireplace; San Francisco car chase scene not included.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft

We will meet at the parking lot for Squak Mountain on May Valley Road. Address: 201430 SE May Valley Rd, Issaquah, WA 98027. There is an outhouse at this parking lot.

A Discovery Pass is required to park here.

Please be ready to go at 3:00pm.

Directions from the WTA:
I-90 to Exit 15 (WA 900 / 17th Ave NW). Take this road south; if you've been traveling eastbound on I-90 that's a right turn off the interstate. The road will become Renton-Issaquah Road SE. About 4 miles from the interstate, turn left on May Valley Road. Drive 2.5 miles to a large sign for Squak Mountain State Park on your left.

Since this hike is for the B3 backpacking class students, gear testing is welcome! Leaders are open to pausing for trying out backpacking gear and answering questions.

Here's our trip plan: we will start at the May Valley trailhead, go up to the Bullitt fireplace, with possible extension on to Old Griz/Phil's Creek trails. It's about 5 miles without going on to Old Griz/Phil's Creek, or about 7 miles if we do add on a bit of those trails. About 1500-2000 feet of elevation gain depending on the exact route we take.

This route has some uphills and downhills that are steeper with loose rocks and mud, so hiking poles are suggested.
