This is a long hike to a Royal Basin, and if we have any energy left when we reach the lake we'll continue to the upper basin--which is really the main attraction. The hike to the lake is 14 miles R/T and 2700' of gain. I've added another mile and a few hundred more feet to the total to allow for exploring a bit around the lake. The trip to the upper basin adds about two miles and 500' to the trip, and I'm not sure I'm up for that. Maybe. TBD when we get to the lake. Be assured, there will be no pressure; if you get to the lake and don't want to go to the upper basin, so be it.
We'll take it easy on the way up, with more rest stops than I usually allow for. Pacing is key on a trip this long. Plan on being on the trail for around eight hours, and then add another couple of hours for lunch and sloth. Lots of sloth. I'm a big fan of sloth. Gluttony too.
NOTE: If you're a hike leader and you've been to Royal Basin, and you're interested in co-leading this activity, let me know.
Meet at the Upper Dungeness trailhead at 07:30. Forest Pass parking permit required.
Note: I don't organize carpools.
