This is a 12.5 mile out and back to Pratt Lake. Getting to the lake is mostly uphill through canopied forest with lovely stream crossings. The 1.8 mile descent to the lake is exposed with talus field crossing, meadow, and lakeside stroll to our turn around point and lunch break.
At the lake, based on group consensus, we will take a 45 min-1 hour break, where you can take your shoes off, take a dip, eat lunch, and/or bring a hammock and a book. There is a back country camping area that has clearings and shouldn't be too busy on a Tuesday. There is also a back country toilet. If you are planning on getting in the lake, please no bug spray and minimize sunscreen. Bring a change of clothes if you do not wish to hike wet.
Pace will be 2 miles per hour, with about 2-5 min breaks on the way up to the lake. Our group will stay together. For the sake of the group, please consider the pace and length of this hike and be realistic about your abilities.
For leader permission please Email me (with “Pratt lake” in subject line) with at least a 10 mile hike with similar elevation gain you have done in 2023. If you are planning on going in the lake, please share a wilderness lake experience if you have one (basically want to know you can swim and be safe in cold water).
Bring at least 2 liters of water, more if it is hot (could filter some), lunch, energy snacks. Poles are recommended.
Goals: Have fun, be safe, socialize, and get your feet seasoned for longer hikes.
Meet at Pratt Lake/Granite Mountain trailhead @ 0830 ready to go at 0845. I am open to carpooling from Tacoma/or create a carpool from the roster.
