Day Hike - Marmot Pass & Buckhorn Mountain

Day Hike to Marmot Pass and possibly to Buckhorn Mountain if the group is so inclined. This is a long, strenuous hike, but it really pays off in the last 20% of the hike with incredible views.

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.6 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,400 ft

Let's meet at the North Viking Transit Center (across the street from the Sonic Drive-in, just off 305) at 7:00 am. We can carpool from here to the trailhead, which is about 1 hour, 20 minutes from the transit center. If this is out of your way, and you'd rather meet at the trailhead, that's fine, too. Search Google Maps for "Marmot Pass Trailhead" and be ready to leave on the hike by 8:45 am.

If you're not familiar with the hike, it's a long uphill hike with beautiful views at the top. I like to hike between 1.5 and 2 mph, taking breaks approximately every hour for 5 minutes or so.

There may possibly be icy conditions near the top, so be prepared for that possibility: maybe bring microspikes if you have them, and/or trekking poles to help keep your balance in slippery conditions. I'll check WTA trip reports in the weeks before we go to see what the conditions are like and notify the group if there are any concerns.
