  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 500 ft

The trip will follow a forest road past Lake Kachess Campground with glimpses of this lake and then gradually climb some 400 more ft. along forest roads some of which may be groomed for snowmobiles. However there are normally few snowmobiles to contend with midweek.

After about 6 miles we will reach Box Canyon Campground where I plan we take lunch. We will return by the same route. Conditions can vary depending on snow conditions, temperature and how recently the trails have been groomed. Most of the route is fairly flat but there will be no tracks cut and no Nordic ski grooming. Some sections involve hills and therefore this is an N2 ski requiring the ability to use a wedge/snowplow position for descents. The trip is not suitable for first-time Nordic skiers even with Alpine experience.

Nordic classic no-wax or backcountry skis are recommended. Please consult the leader if you wish to use other types of ski.

Car pooling from the Preston P&R; meeting at 8:45 am is suggested and all vehicles taken to the trailhead will require WA Snopark Passes. Passes need to be purchased in advance: contact the leader for more information.

Taking everyone who signs up will be dependent on enough drivers with suitable vehicles for winter snow conditions volunteering. Directions to Preston P&R and the trailhead will be provided nearer the date to those who register.
