Backpack - Shi Shi Beach and Cape Flattery

Two nights at Shi Shi Beach near the amazing Point of Arches. On the middle day we will explore the coast to the south possibly as far as Seafield Creek. We will visit Cape Flattery on our way to the Shi Shi Trailhead on Saturday. Expect: the best coastal section in Washington--low tides, sandy beaches, rocky beaches, headlands, rope climbs, lots of ups and downs on Sunday's exploration. Leader Permission is Required. Shi Shi Beach and the areas to its south are, in my estimation, the most beautiful of all the sections of the Washington Coast.   It has it all--varied beaches, views, sea stacks, hidden coves and wildlife. This weekend will have extra-low tides for tide-pooling each morning.   There will be a full moon.  We may do a night moon walk on the beach.

Saturday's day hike will be challenging with many steep ups and downs and multiple knotted ropes that one must climb to ascend/descend the bluffs.  This is no "walk on the beach".  The trailhead is about a 4.5 hour drive from Seattle and may involve a ferry ride, depending on where you are coming from.  Bear Canisters are required.  They can be rented at the WIC is needed.

This is a Leader's Permission Only Trip:  When requesting permission, please answer the following four questions.

1)  I understand that there are several added fees to this trips.  The Neah Bay Permit is $20 per car (to enter the reservation) and the private parking lot is about $10 per night or maybe per day (we will see) for each car.  Bring cash for the private lot.  There is  $8/night, plus a reservation fee for Olympic National Park.  I will be prepared to pay these fees.  Yes or No?

2)  Please tell me about your backpacking history over the past year.  Have you backpacked at the ocean before?

3)  Please let me know what you have been doing this past winter and spring to be in proper conditioning to do this trip?

4)  This trip will have multiple knotted ropes to climb on steep angled slopes, some as high as 50' or more.  Are you comfortable do this?  Yes or No?

I hope you can join me this should be a really fun trip.  Rob

We will meet at the WIC is Port Angeles, Friday about 9 AM to secure our permits.  We will caravan to the Neah Bay, buy our Makah Permits, then proceed to Cape Flattery for a very short but wonderful hike.  Then on to the private, pay, parking lot for Shi Shi Beach.  The Neah Bay Permit is $20 per car (to enter the reservation) and the private parking lot is about $10 per night or maybe per day for each car.  Bring cash for the private lot.  There is  $8/night, plus reservation fee for Olympic National Park.
