Ozette Triangle

Trip

Backpack - Ozette Triangle

The ocean calls! A moderate loop with minimal elevation gain on boardwalks through ancient forests and a hike along an Olympic Coast beach in between. We'll coordinate with the tides and add optional day hike extensions from our beach side camps. Priority registration to Backpacking Building Blocks B3 course students in Sarah and Trisha's mentor group, then any Mountaineers member can ask permission to register starting April 6 at 8pm; email hess@whidbey.com and provide recent backpacks you've completed lately so we can ensure this trip is a good fit for you.

Day 1: Ranger station trailhead to our Cape Alava camp, 3 1/2 miles, with an optional day hike extension north on the beach toward the Ozette River.

Day 2: Cape Alava camp  south to our South Sand Point camp, 4 miles, with an optional day hike extension south on the beach toward Yellow Banks.

Day 3: South Sand Point camp to our starting trailhead, completing the triangle, 4 miles.

This trip and itinerary are dependent on the leader being able to acquire the needed permits.  Each participant needs to reimburse the leader for their permit fee ($18).  You are still responsible for this fee if you cancel after registration closes.  An America the Beautiful or National Park Pass is required for each vehicle.  Bear cans are required, and can be borrowed from the Park Service.

This trip is lower mileage and elevation, but has other challenges.  On day two we'll coordinate our hiking hours with the tides, and navigate rocks and boulders as we hike along the beach (a 1 mph pace is typical).  Boardwalks and the trail can be slick and muddy.  But there's nothing like the ocean, and it'll be a great trip.

A "Hello Hiker" email with more detailed trip information will be emailed to participants about a week before the trip.

Meet at the Ozette Ranger Station parking lot with boots on and packs ready to go at noon.
