Spend an easy Sunday afternoon hiking the beautiful scenery of Ancient Lakes. On this overnight backpack, we will set up camp, explore the area with plenty of opportunity for photos, have dinner, stories and stargaze. Monday morning, what could be better than coffee and a sunrise?

  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 200 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

Meeting Place and Time: Sunday May 7 at 12 PM at Ancient and Dusty Lakes Trailhead: Google Maps names the trailhead Lower Ancient Lakes Trailhead.

Directions to the Trailhead: Drive east on I-90 to George (Exit 149). Turn left and drive on SR 281 to Quincy. In Quincy, turn left (west) on SR 28 and drive 4 miles to White Trail Road. Turn left and drive about 7 miles or so until you reach Road 9-NW and drive 5.9 miles to the road's end. Each vehicle will need a Discover Pass (the fine is expensive if you forget it!). No worries if you’re are a little late (unless you’re 15 minutes late and no one has heard anything from you).

***Discover Pass Required

****Carpooling options from North Bend TBD

Supplemental Gear/Supplies Required: Carry all water, Ancient Lakes does not have water suitable for filtering available due to agriculture runoff. Bear canister or critter proof Opsak or Ursak.

Timeline: The trip will officially start around noon in the LOWER Ancient Lake Parking lot, and it will end when we get back to it on Monday. We will hike in together to our campsite and set up camp. The location is popular but the trails are wide and have unlimited stepping-aside space.

Land Acknowledgment: The people of the Yakama nation inhabited more than 12 million acres across Adams, Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Franklin, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, and Yakima Counties. Today, we honor those native peoples who are tied to the land through history, legends, and culture.

Our trip will go something like this:

  • Lunch at your own pace. You may either grab lunch in George, WA near the truck stop (I hear there is a good taco truck) or pack a lunch to eat at the trailhead or eat lunch at camp after setting up your camp site.

  • 12:00 get to trailhead and go over group expectations and introductions

  • 12:15 leave trailhead

  • 1:15 get to camp and set it up. It’s about 1.5 miles with essentially no elevation gain, so one hour is reasonable, though it could be a bit more

  • 2:30 get together for a hike – optional

  • 5:00 back to camp

  • 6:00 dinner

  • 9:00 stargaze/share stories/crash (or whenever you like)

Monday

  • 8:00 get up, breakfast, look around, pack up. You’re welcome to get up earlier or later as long as you’re ready to go by 10:00

  • 10:00 leave

  • 11:00 back at cars

  • 3:00 home.
