Backcountry Ski/Snowboard - Rampart Ridge

Brush trimming hike to improve winter ski route (date updated)

  • M2 Advanced Ski, *Varies*
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 3,600 ft

This will be a hike (likely in crummy weather) with pruning tools to improve the lower access ski trail to Mt Margaret and Rampart Ridge by trimming branches that are growing into the route.

I cleared this trail about a decade ago and recently inspected the lowest portion and the route will benefit from some additional trimming.

You'll need sturdy boots, tough rain gear that can tolerate contact with brush, work gloves to protect hands and a helmet to protect from falling branches.   You'll also need a pruning saw on a pole.   The most effective tool I've found is a replacement pruning saw blade bolted onto a replacement rake handle.
