Alpine Scramble - Old Snowy Mountain–Ives Peak Traverse

Three-day backpack and scramble of Old Snowy and Ives from Berry Patch TH, camping at Goat Lake. Option to scramble or hike to Hawkeye Point.

  • Strenuous, Strenuous 3, Technical 3
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 18.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,934 ft
  • Pace: 2.0-2.5 mph on trail; slower off trail

Please have some backpacking experience and lightweight gear. Starting pack weight including food and two liters of water ideally should be under 25 lbs; 30 lbs max.

This should be a relatively relaxed trip, as these peaks are typically done in two days...  We can return on Day 2 if we return to camp early and everyone wants to, but I'm planning on three days.

Day 1: Drive from S Renton P&R to Berry Patch TH, 3.0 - 3.5 hrs; hike Goat Ridge Trail to Goat Lake, 6.0 miles, 2800' gain.

Day 2: Hike/scramble to Old Snowy then traverse to Ives Peak; return to Goat Lake camp; 5.5 miles, 2600' gain.

Day 3: Hike back to Berry Patch TH, probably via Snowgrass Flats Trail; 7.0 miles, 600' gain. Drive home.

Option to scramble and/or hike to Hawkeye Point from Goat Lake camp, on whichever day works best. 2.0 miles RT, 1200' gain.

Windy: Goat Rocks Wilderness weather forecast

07:00 at South Renton P&R, to form carpool(s).
