Alpine Scramble - Howard Peak & Florence Peak
A grand fall color tour in Mount Rainier National Park, of peaks and ridges in the area just south of the Carbon River. This traverse of false Gove (the higher peak, no Rainier 100 credit ;), Tolmie, Howard, and Florence (in that order) is a S5/T4+ scramble (~5400’ gain/~16 miles).

A great fall traverse with quite the variety of terrain, including interesting rock formations. We’re doing this loop in the clockwise direction to avoid the cliff bands between Green Lake and false Gove Peak (you can read the trip report from my 10/17/2020 private trip in the counter-clockwise direction to see my motivation, the trip report is under the Gove route/place). Should be easier in this direction. Photos from prior trips to this venue can be seen here (in the opposite direction of course ;).
If winters keep trending like they’ve been recently this may be the last access to the Carbon River area for some time (just past the one-car-at-a-time short/deep chasm bridge the road is one lane due to a winter slide, and this winter it might become no lanes ;). Got Carbon?
