Trip Report

Day Hike - Mailbox Peak

A very fun trek with fellow Mountaineers on a gorgeous day!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The "old" trail was in it's infamously marvelous rooty rocky never ending steep condition and we loved every step of it! Although it was somewhat of a relief to descend on the pleasantly normal "new" trail that was in great shape with only one skinny tree to step over. Lots of little flying bugs at the Mailbox, not really biting but just making themselves known.

We all arrived at the trailhead before 7:30 and the gate was open with plenty of parking available. The bathrooms were tolerable and well stocked. Met very few others heading up the Old trail, and several parties coming up as we headed down the New trail. We were invited to help celebrate a birthday at the Mailbox and sang a lively Happy Birthday song to an eighteen year old!

My gaiagps stats show 8 miles rt and just under 4,000' gain. Round trip time was 7 hours/10 minutes including a few short breaks and about a half hour at the Mailbox. It was a wonderful challenging day with wonderful companions!
