Winter Scramble - Silver Peak

Perfect weather for a fun winter scramble of Silver Peak from the PCT

  • Snow and ice on road
  • Snow and ice on the road -- 4wd needed.  Two Toyota Trucks, a land rover, and a subaru outback all made it.  Road will probably be impassable after next snow storm

Our group of 9 met at Snoqualmie West at 7:00.  We decided to roll the dice and drive up road 9070 so we could access Silver Peak from the PCT instead of from Annette Lake.   Though a fair amount of new snow was on the road, with our high clearance vehicles, we were able to drive up to Windy Pass.

We brought snowshoes and micrsopikes.  There was about 4 new inches of snow along the PCT but we left the snowshoes on our pack and proceeded up to the Tinkham/Silver Saddle.  We then turned north and headed up to Silver Peak.

The snow was a little slippery, so most scramblers used their microspikes.  We had clear views of Rainier and all the other surrounding peaks.  We descended down to the base of Silver Peak.  Unfortunately because of our sauntering pace (due to the snow not the scramblers efforts), we decided that there would not be enough time to attempt Abiel, so we headed down the way we came up.

Perfect weather the whole day and great company.  We'll go back to Tinham and Abiel in the summer once the snow is gone.
