Ozette Triangle

A moderate, 9.4 mile loop day hike with just 350 ft in elevation gain. The trail follows the Cape Alava and Sand Point Trails. You'll hike on a boardwalk through ancient forests to and from the ocean, with a walk along an Olympic Coast beach in between.

Getting There

From Port Angeles, follow US-101 West to SR-112. Turn right, and follow SR-112 west to Sekiu. Turn left onto Hoko-Ozette Rd, and drive for 21 miles to the Ozette Ranger Station and trailhead.

on the trail

With sea stacks, sea otters, sea lions, and ocean scenery for as far as you can see, the Ozette Triangle is one of the finest hikes on the Olympic Coast. Most of the way is via a cedar-planked boardwalk, convenient for traversing the saturated terrain but slippery during periods of rain. Follow the shoreline for 3.1 adventurous miles. Look out to offshore islands. Search the ocean waters for seals, whales, and scores of pelagic birds. Look in tidal pools. Look up in the towering trees hugging the shoreline for perched eagles. Search for Makah petroglyphs etched into the Wedding Rocks.

notes

  • Raccoons and squirrels are known to steal food so you are required to store your food in a bear canister, which you can rent at the Lake Ozette Ranger Station or at other park ranger stations.
  • No beach fires are permitted at Sand Point.
  • There are several group camp sites at both Sand Point and Cape Alava. An annual beach cleanup is held in late April.
