Mount Adams Highline—Devils Garden

The route follows the Highline Trail, which circumnavigates Mount Adams, along its final clockwise leg before it enters land owned by the Yakima Nation. The upper portion of the route passes through a barren volcanic landscape that gives the area its name.

Getting There

From US-12 in Randle, drive 0.9 mile south on SR-131 and bear left onto Forest Road 23. Drive 30.7 miles and turn right onto Forest Road 2329. In 0.8 mile bear right, pass the Takhlakh Lake Campground in another 0.8 mile, and in 5.2 miles turn right onto Forest Road Spur 086. Drive 0.4 mile to the Muddy Meadows Trailhead  (4,400 ft).

On The Trail

Hike the Muddy Meadows Trail (No. 13) southeast 2.9 miles to the intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) at 5,200 ft. Continue on the Muddy Meadows Trail another  1.9 miles to the intersection with the Highline Trail at 5,850 ft. Turn left onto the Highline Trail and follow it southeast then south another 4 miles until the point where the trail enters the Yakima Nation (~7,700 ft). The route ends here—a separate permit is required to enter the Yakima Reservation.

Campsites are at Foggy Flat (6 miles),  Muddy Ford Creek (7.4 miles), and at Devil's Gardens (9.3 miles).

Notes

  • The route has multiple creek crossings, some of which can be treacherous or impassible during periods of high flow from glacial and snow melt, especially in early season.  Bring water shoes and be prepared to turn around if conditions are unsafe.
  • The pumice fields and other volcanic features in the upper portion of the route can be sharp. Be careful when off trail.
