North Cascades Photography

  • The Mt. Baker HWY is very well maintained even in extreme Winter days. Of course, use common sense as snowfall in the Mt. Baker area borders on the insane. Mt. Baker holds the world record for snowfall during one season. I've been in complete whiteout conditions while driving twice in the last seven years. No fun.

    The hiking to take these shots is very easy. Artist Ridge has some areas that are paved. Winter is a bit more challenging. 

The North Cascades are magical.

In this photography trip report I focused on the border peaks as well as Mt. Larrabee. I have included the focal ranges I shot these mountains for those interested in photography. Winter is by far when we hit the highs in magic. The passing snowstorms create wonderful lighting. It's absolutely necessary to take the drive up frequently to catch these special days. 

Due to the topography of the North Cascades some photography rules are impossible to follow. Leading lines comes to mind. It takes a while to learn how to shoot it unless you have a vast experience of photography from around the world. I am still leaning how to shoot it. I am always in awe when the North Cascades reveal their rugged beauty. 

I love the combination of being in the mountain wilderness as well as being able to capture a shot now and then. I shoot alone. I love it because I can concentrate not just in the photography but also the wild surroundings. Two reasons spin my wheel to go up and up again and again.
